The Speaker of the House of the House of Commons visited Bury Grammar School to discuss politics and the role of young people in the future of the country.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, MP for Chorley, addressed an audience of students, parents and guests and touched on a number of topics, including his life, climate change and terrorism.

The event, which was attended by Bury MPs James Daly and Christian Wakeford, gave students got the chance to ask questions, covering his opinions on current events, to how he balances his home and political lives.

Jo Anderson, Principal and Headmistress, said “We are thrilled to be welcoming Sir Lindsay Hoyle to Bury Grammar School this week.

"A highly respected figure of national importance, we are honoured that he accepted our invitation to speak to our community.

"Our pupils couldn't wait to ask Sir Lindsay a whole raft of questions about his role, his inside experiences of the House of Commons, his views on the nature of democracy...and his pets.

"Opportunities to meet key players on the national stage do not come along often, so we await Friday's lecture and Q+A session with great anticipation.”

Vice Principal Devin Cassidy added: "We were utterly honoured to have him come here and speak with us all and it was a pleasure to be able to invite former pupils, guests and pupils from other schools to the event, which made it a real community event.

"For someone so huge and embroiled in national politics and such a huge public figure at the forefront of the discourses of public life was a real pleasure."

James Daly, MP for Bury North said: "I think it was wonderful to have the speaker of the house with us in Bury, talking about his life and journey to becoming Speaker of the House.

"It is crucial that young people in our area understand what they can achieve in any career they want and it was great to hear from a true Lancastrian."

Bury South MP Christian Wakeford said: "Days like this help put Bury on the map and to have a national figure here of this standing is amazing.

"It was a delight to meet him and hear the articulacy and honesty come through in his speech."

School captain Joe Bangbala said: "It's fantastic to have a Parliamentary figure here who is so dedicated to his constituents and its invigorating to young minds like mine that are fascinated in politics."

Head Girl Chloe Parkinson also commented: "It was both a pleasure and an honour to welcome Lindsay Hoyle here and we're thankful for him to take the time to come and speak with him."
