A YOUNG boy has passed his first intermediate maths GCSE – at the age of just nine.

Leonardo Del Rosso, originally from Bolton but now living in Mostyn in Wales, has always been a clever boy, saying his first word at two months, knowing all his phonics at one and all his timetables at four – and now he has passed his first GCSE.

During the summer holidays last year, Leonardo was getting bored and didn’t want to take part in football or the Beavers group so instead his parents got him a tutor so he could carry on learning.

As a hobby, he spends his time reading A-level science books for fun, so he couldn’t wait to learn at a higher level.

Jade Ashbrook, Leonardo’s maths tutor said when Leonardo’s mum Emma got in touch she was expecting to teach the GCSE content to a 16-year-old.

She said: “When Leonardo‘s mum first contacted me about maths tuition for GCSE, I was expecting a 16-year-old student.

“It was only after exchanging a few messages, that she told me he was nine. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but within 10 minutes of meeting him, I knew he was a very gifted young man.

“I really am so proud of everything he has achieved to date and I know that Leonardo will be a name to look out for in the future, as he has a mind that will make a difference to the world of mathematics and science.”

Speaking of his own success, Leonardo said he was “nervited – nervous and excited” before he took his intermediate exam.

And on getting his results he said: “I’m very happy. I like to keep my brain busy and learn new things.”

Within four months, Leonardo had learned seven years’ worth of maths and completed his exam in November last year, passing with flying colours – and now he is now revising for the higher paper.

Michael and Emma Del Rosso, Leonardo’s parents, said they are beyond proud of his success and can’t wait to see what he achieves next.

Emma said: “We are absolutely bursting with pride, it’s just amazing. He has got a mind for NASA, he is just so gifted.”

Michael said: “He has blown us away and he always surprises us. He devours books and we knew he was smart.

“He knows the periodic table, he knows the elements and he knows Pi to about 20 decimal places and we just can’t keep up with him.”

In June, Leonardo hopes to do the higher paper to gain an A*.
