Residents of the Ferngrove estate in Bury had to wait for a long time before work on a long-promised by-pass finally started.
The estate was built on land off Bell Lane and Rochdale Old Road before the Second World War and a large area of land was left free for a bypass.
More than 40 years later, in August 1970 when this photo was taken, plans had finally been approved and the grassy wasteland between the houses would soon become part of the northerly section of Bury’s easterly by-pass.
Now you might recognise it as part of the M66
