Traffic chaos came to Bury in the run-up to Christmas in 1976 as work progressed on a £2 million project to ease congestion around Bury Bridge.
Huge pre-cast concrete beams had to be laid alongside the existing bridge, which reduced traffic to single file.
The work on the inner relief road was due to be completed in the summer of 1977
