Fears that this impressive viaduct over the Irwell would crumble into the river were averted in 1987 when Bury Council announced it would buy the Bury to Holcombe Brook railway line which ran over the structure near Bury Bridge.
The aim was to restore the viaduct and for it to form art of an ambitious long-term plan to create a walk from Bury town centre to the edge of the West Pennine Moors below Holcombe Hill.
Purchase and renovation costs were estimated to be around £33,000.
