Shoppers at Mill Gate Shopping Centre have dug deep to raise £5,955 for Bury Lions Club has raised £5,955 over four consecutive weekends to help people in Ukraine.

The collection was set up at the centre asking shoppers to donate to the charity and members of the Bury Lions expressed their thanks to the generosity of the public.

They said that one particular gentleman drew out £100 to donate to them and a woman passer-by gave them £50.

They have also been given a further donation of £45, making the grand total to £6000.

Bury Lions Club have sent half the proceeds to their Lions Clubs International Foundation to assist with refugees and misplaced persons following the conflict in Ukraine.

This appeal has been set-up to support Lions Clubs working on the ground in neighbouring countries to Ukraine.

The remaining funds will be utilised to support Ukrainian refugees settling within the area.

In addition to the above, Bury Lions have donated a further £500 to Lions Clubs International Foundation and £500 to the Polish Club towards fuel costs for a convoy to take humanitarian aid to Poland.

A spokesperson for the club said: “Our appreciation goes to the centre and Bury Council licensing department for giving us permission and enabling us to collect.

“It was a humbling experience for all those who took part in the collection, listening to those donating, not knowing where their own Ukrainian families were.”
