Calls have been made to make a popular park more secure after Travellers moved on to the site for the second time in less than three months.

A camp was set up on St Mary’s Park in Prestwich over the weekend.

Concerns have been raised about whether Travellers will on the site during a music festival.

St Mary’s councillor Sean Thorpe commented saying: “I’ve not had an update on if they are still there, but I do know that Bury Council are involved, and the police are too because some of the behaviour has been antisocial.

“We are conscious of Festwich happening soon, so we have urged the council to work extremely quickly.

“They were there in May, so we’ve asked for the council to come up with a solution that makes it harder to enter the field however we do need to allow access for emergency vehicles because it’s used for children’s football, fair etc so whilst we’re trying to secure it, we also have to be mindful about access.

“We don’t know if any criminal damage was done for them to be able to get on.

“It’s clearly an issue as it’s happened twice now in the space of three months, so we do need a solution whilst also allowing access.”

Festwich 2022 will be celebrating 10 years this year and is the UK’s biggest tribute festival which has grown from strength to strength and will be taking place on St Mary’s Park on July 30 and 31.

“It’s clearly an issue as it’s happened twice now in the space of three months, so we do need a solution whilst also allowing access.”

Bury Council have been contacted for a comment.
