Radcliffe residents have expressed anger after several very high road signs described to be more suitable for giraffes have been put up in the area.

The signs for pedestrians and bikers include a small circle towards the top of a metal pole thought to be around 12ft in height.

Make Bower, from Radcliffe, was one of the first to point out the unusual signs.

He said: “Last week I was coming out of Greenbank Road, just off of Ainsworth Road, and I noticed these contractors putting some great big aluminium or metal poles in the ground at the junction.

“I did wonder what are they doing so I came back later.

“They had put a tiny sign of a pedestrian and bike right at the top of this huge pole. The signs are about 12 inches, and the pole is around 12 feet.

“The other new junction has four or five there too and one of those has been put up so high it is in the trees.”

In a post shared on Facebook, other residents were quick to joke, suggesting ‘giraffes are coming to town’, it is for ‘the great Radcliffe stilt race’ or the signs have been put up ‘so birds can see that pedestrians and cyclists use the path below and know not to poo there’.

Although some saw the funnier side to things, others have expressed anger, wanting to know the cost of these ‘ridiculous’ signs, if the size had been ordered wrongly or if there was a reason behind the height.

Bury Council have been approached for a comment.
