The Royal Tram brought Queen Elizabeth II to Bury for her first visit to the town in 38 years on July 17, 1992.

The Queen had officially opened the new Metrolink in Manchester’s St Peter’s Square before making the journey to Bury.

She was taken from the Metrolink station in a black Rolls Royce to Knowsley Street where, to the delight of the hundreds gathered, the royal motorcade stopped and the Queen went on a ‘walkabout’ chatting to the crowds, some of whom had waited three hours to see her and receiving impromptu bouquets.

The Besses o’th’Barn provided musical accompaniment as the Queen met the town’s two MPs before she went into the town hall for an official lunch.

After lunch there as just time for a wave to the crowd before the Queen was driven to her next official stop in Rochdale.
