Precious items that belonged to a legendary singer-songwriter from Prestwich are set to be acquired by Bury archive services.

Nostalgic pieces of work owned by Mark E Smith, the late frontman of indie rock band, The Fall, will be donated to the borough’s archive service following an auction earlier this month.

In August, a collection of the frontman’s possessions was listed for sale by auction house, Omega, including handwritten set lists, lyrics, books and posters.

A fan of the band, Adam Spencer, purchased four items at the auction, including a handwritten set list, tour itinerary, typed lyrics and tour dates annotated by the singer.

All four items came to £1,792 and will be collected by Bury archives next week.

Adam has launched a fundraiser to cover the costs and has so far received more than £1,200 of donations.

Archivist Ian Johnstone, 51, said he is “really pleased” with what Adam managed to get.

He said: “I’m really pleased, given the prices that were paid for a lot of the material.

“I think we did really well, we’ve got typed set lists and hand-written set lists for this concert at Prestwich Hospital which is excellent, so I was very pleased.”

Ian says he hopes this is the beginning of a larger archive of the musical and cultural significance of Bury.

He continued: “I want to try and use this as a way to try and acquire additional material relating to The Fall but any other bands with local connections to Bury because it a really important part of the culture.

“Loads of people in Prestwich are in bands or know bands or go and watch bands that have material and hopefully this may encourage them to donate.

“I see this as the start, its definitely not the end.

“The short-term aim is just to raise the rest of the money but then longer term we’ll be looking to utilise this material."
