David Unsworth hopes Latics can capitalise on a battling point against title hopefuls Notts County and back it up with their first National League away win of the season.

Latics have the worst record on the road in the division having picked up just four points from their 12 games so far - all draws.

After climbing out of the bottom four on New Year's Day by virtue of their 2-2 draw with the leaders, their next challenge is a trip to mid-table Dorking Wanderers (Saturday, kick-off 3pm).

Unsworth knows the part-time Surrey side will pose a different test, but he insists it is one they will be ready for after a week of him hammering home the messages that made an impact in the first game of 2023.

“It was nice to see all the work we had done on the training ground come to fruition and the players carry out the game plan to the letter. It totally recharges you when you’ve had a performance like that,” said the Latics boss.

“What we have to do now is find that level of consistency week in, week out. We’ve got to do it everywhere we go, not just at Boundary Park. We will get there.

“Dorking got beat last weekend so they will be smarting, it’s a plastic pitch, but the players can take some confidence from New Year’s Day into that game now.

“I’ll be reiterating the level of performance, the level of game plan. We are going down there with some confidence.”
