ANDY Welsh hailed another special day in the history of Bury AFC after they reached the quarter finals of the FA Vase.

Niall Cummins’ late strike, after Ben Wharton had given them the lead, sealed a 2-1 win at Tring Athletic to make sure it was a memorable 400-mile round trip for all involved.

Bury won’t have too far to travel in the last eight having been drawn away to fellow NWCL Premier Division side Congleton Town.

And they got a taste of what to expect after battling out a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.

Looking back on Saturday’s win in Hertfordshire, Welsh admitted it was emotional for all involved but also said no-one is getting too excited or carried away.

“I’m so proud of the football club, the fans were absolutely immense,” he said. “I know it is easy when you win games to stand here and say that but they are here all the time and it is days like that we remember and this is the history of the club building as we speak and that is just another fantastic day for us.

“But we haven’t done anything yet, we are not getting too excited, we move on to the next round.

“Again it is not just the players who have gone on the pitch it is everyone as a collective as this culture and environment we are building at this club.”

At Congleton, Bury got off to a perfect start when Connor Comber gave them the lead in the first minute only for Jonathan Beaumont to score an injury time equaliser.

Welsh said: “Disappointed that we have drawn the game with a late equaliser.

“They are a tough team to play against, you look at their stats at home, they have only lost one game all season so they are a good side.”

Bury AFC travel to Barnoldswick Town on Saturday (3pm ko).
