A thoroughly disappointing performance in East London by Oldham led to a goalless draw against Dagenham and Redbridge and another place dropped in the league in the hunt for a play-off spot.

With now six games to go this was hugely frustrating, and even more so when Mike Fondop should have snatched victory for us at the death.

Not only was it disappointing but it was also surprising considering the level of performance only a week earlier against Chesterfield when it looked like we had possibly turned a corner and were looking at finding some form again.

I don’t want to pick out individuals for their displays; I’m sure those players know when their performances aren’t up to the standard expected and of which they are no doubt capable. I’m also not going to look at mentality again. Rather, I’m going to look at the team, including staff, as a whole and wonder where we go from here.

Firstly, this season is not over. We can still reach the play-offs. We have six very winnable matches to go, including two against rivals in and around us in the division and we simply need to find a way to grind out results in those to finish in that top seven.

To do that, I think we need to go back to basics. We are solid enough at the back, rarely conceding goals, and that gives us a solid foundation to work on.

But it’s what we do with that foundation. Too often, we don’t find a man with a simple pass and look long for the front two to either chase or try to win with their head.

I want to see us want the ball, and use it wisely, not get rid of it as soon as possible like it’s on fire. This is where the staff come in.

Listening to Micky Mellon on the touchline at home, he wants that too so I’m hoping to see a settled XI that will do that for these vital games and build some form as a unit.

We know that we have goals in our side. With Norwood, Garner, Dallas and Fondop, we are potent, so let’s give them some real service to play with and not have them feeding off scraps.

We have a six-game mini-season left to get into the play-offs for a tilt at promotion.

We can do it, we have the squad and the staff to do it. Let’s hope they go out and show us that over a huge Easter weekend when we take on rivals Altrincham on Monday but which starts with AFC Fylde on Friday, who we owe one after they beat us comfortably in October.
