I WOULD like to express disgust about what is being allowed to happen in Bolton.

Every building with character is systematically being demolished. It matters not that people object, thousands can sign a petition but in the end the people’s wishes are ignored.

There was nothing wrong with our Market Hall, all the little individual stalls drew people from other towns into Bolton. Now it is just like any other mall, and I have yet to hear anyone say they approve of the change.

Churchgate is a mixture of old and new buildings. I think it might have been worth saving the old Grand Theatre, but the excuse is always they would need to spend money to save a building and, of course, the council can’t afford it.

The Odeon Cinema was demolished, now being followed by Clarence Street Centre. Even a small primary school in Harwood has been demolished, despite the fact it could have been used as a youth centre or pensioners’ meeting place.

What will be next? Nothing is sacred. All that replaces these buildings of character are either flats or car parks.

In Germany if a building is demolished it has to be replaced by a similar building, this way they don’t end up with a hotch-potch of old and new, which is what we now have in Bolton.
