AFTER reading the news that DNA records are to be destroyed, and then later the news of the two girls who were raped in Horwich, I really feel that those who would prefer DNA records to be kept should have more of a say.
DNA evidence leads to the capture and prosecution of many criminals. Within the last few months DNA records have also proved where miscarriages of justice have occurred.
Civil liberties groups may have applauded the decision by a court to scrap DNA records, but I sincerely believe it is a huge mistake.
I support the police, who want to be allowed to keep a record of DNA evidence for up to 24 years. I also wonder if the majority of other people in Bolton would prefer to see DNA records destroyed or kept. This issue should be debated at the next elections.
