MICHAEL Hamer calmly chatted and lied to his mother on his mobile phone moments after savagely killing Joe Geeling.

Mrs Julie Hamer made two calls to her son in the space of four minutes as he was burying his victim's body in a shallow grave in Whitehead Park. His mum works for a call centre and all incoming and outgoing calls are recorded. Police later seized the tapes featuring the conversations between the pair. In both calls, there is nothing in the tone of Hamer's voice that would suggest he was up to anything out of the ordinary. The following are transcripts of the calls between Hamer and his mother. The first call was made at 4.48pm.

Mrs Hamer: Hello.

Michael: Hi it's only me.

Mrs Hamer: Where are you?

Michael: I'm coming home now.

Mrs Hamer: Right, I'll ring you back in a bit, love.

Michael: I'm not on the house phone though.

Mrs Hamer: Why not?

Michael: Cos it doesn't seem to be working.

Mrs Hamer: Right, I'll ring you on your mobile then.

Michael: Right, bye.

Mrs Hamer: Thanks, bye.

Hamer is making his way back through the park with the empty wheelie bin when, at 4.52pm, Mrs Hamer rings him on his mobile phone.

Michael: Hiya.

Mrs Hamer: Did the house phone not ring at all then?

Michael: No.

Mrs Hamer: Where are you Michael?

Michael: I'm nearly home, I just nipped out Mrs Hamer: ...Where are you?

Michael: I'm just around the corner now. (much of the conversation here is inaudible) Mrs Hamer: Right, I'll erm, are you home now?

Michael: Yeah I'm coming home now, I'm just five minutes away Mrs Hamer: Where have... just where the hell have you been?

Michael: Just over to the park.

Mrs Hamer: Right, I'll ring in a bit.

Michael: Right.

Mrs Hamer: All right.

Michael: See you later.

Mrs Hamer: Bye, ta ra.

Michael: Bye.

Hamer returns home to begin cleaning up the blood from the attack on Joe. At 5.12pm, Hamer answers the house telephone when his mum calls for the second time. There is no problem with the telephone.
