THIS is the letter which lured Joe Geeling to his death.

Written in red ink, the note was discovered in the pocket of Joe's trousers, stained with his blood.

The youngster had been beaten about the head and face and stabbed 16 times.

Michael Hamer had spent many hours crafting the letter, writing in a style that would trick Joe into believing it was official; preying on the youngster's trust and obedience towards adults and others in authority.

The letter, purporting to be from deputy headteacher Linda Foley, identifies Michael as Joe's mentor and encourages the Year 7 pupil to call at the older boy's home to collect some books.

It reads: Joseph, you have heard, YR 10's have started to mentor YR 7's and they've been told to take some books to understand the difficulties some people may be having. As you know, Michael is your mentor and will start next week. Unfortunately Michael has got some of your books, but will be unable to return them to you for two months due to surgery.

So I have spoken to your mum and I have asked her if you could go with Michael to his house and collect them with the permission of your mother.

"I have given the address to your mum and she will meet you at his house at 4.30pm tonight.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Deputy-Head L Foley.

The letter ends with: Do not (the word not' is underlined) discuss this with any one else, as this will cause confusion. Thanks.

Hamer claimed the letter was designed to make Joe feel frightened and intimidated as he himself had felt at the hands of bullies.

Police believe the letter proves that Hamer was a "cold, calculated and scheming young man" who lured Joe to his home with the intention of killing him.

Three other drafts, one containing sexual references, were later found by police in Hamer's bedroom.
