Great British Bake Off’s twelfth series has begun as the show returned to our screens on Tuesday 21 September.

The programme, also known as GBBO, sees amateur bakers take on cake challenges where they attempt to pull off signature, technical and showstopper bakes each week.

How to watch Great British Bake Off 2021

The Great British Bake Off will return to our screens on Tuesday 28 September on channel 4 at 8pm and the show is 90 minutes in length.

The judges, Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue Leith, and presenters Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding have also returned to see the bakers’ creations in the well-known tent.

What is next week’s theme on Great British Bake Off?

Each episode is a combination of a baking week and this week on the show was cake week.

The bakers were tasked with creating 12 mini rolls, a malt loaf with homemade butter before finishing with an anti-gravity illusion cake for the showstopper challenge which had to be based on a personal memory from each baker.

Giuseppe impressed the judges with Jack and the Beanstalk themed showstopper. Jürgen also wowed them with his ‘night time reading’ showstopper with judge Paul Hollywood describing it as “beautiful” before crowning Jürgen as star baker.

Next week we will see the contestants deliver more creations in biscuit week.

The preview of the second episode showed footage of the bakers making biscuit toys as well as interactive showstoppers.

Great British Bake Off 2021 – Best bits from the first episode

The first episode of GBBO gave viewers a giggle when Paul Hollywood pointed out that fellow judge Dame Prue Leith has a look-alike in contestant Maggie.

He joked about the similarities a few times by mixing their names up on purpose when talking to them and he even gave Prue’s glasses to Maggie who put them on, making her look even more like Prue.

Bake Off’s Twitter account tweeted pictures, also mixing the two women’s names and writing: “Just to clear up the confusion about Prue and Maggie… #GBBO”

Imagine being crowned Great British Bake Off’s star baker in your first week on the show only to be left hanging as you make a phone call about the news.

This happened to Jürgen and although fans thought it was sad to see him stand there waiting for someone to pick up, we think it is a great achievement to create such well thought out bakes like he did, earning him the star baker accolade.

One tweeted: "I’m already deeply in love with Jurgen. And I’m devastated that no one answered the flipping phone! #GBBO #BakeOff”

Another tweeted: “Aww poor Jurgen – wanting to brag about being week 1’s #StarBaker and no-one’s picking up the phone #GBBO #BakeOff”

We can also totally relate to making a phone call and having no one answer at our time of need.

The Great British Bake Off will continue to air on channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8pm.
