BURY suffered injury-time heartbreak as Wimbledon snatched all three points with a late winner at Gigg Lane last night.

Former Wanderers midfielder Neil Danns put Bury ahead from the penalty spot but Lyle Taylor equalised five minute before half-time.

A cagey second half followed before Dons defender Jonathan Meades headed in the winner which means Bury go into Monday’s clash with Bolton on the back of five consecutive defeats.

David Flitcroft made two changes from the defeat to neighbours Rochdale at the weekend. The suspended Kean Bryan and Jacob Mellis were replaced by Kelvin Etuhu and Hallam Hope.

The rain came flooding down which made it almost impossible to stroke the ball around in the early exchanges.

Dons forward Tyrone Barnett created a half chance when advancing forward early on but after the ball got stuck in a sticky patch his shot deflected off Antony Kay and trickled straight into the hands of Ben Williams.

Players from both sides struggled to stay on their feet as the turf beneath them began to give way, but there was no excuse for Paul Robinson as he brought down James Vaughan in the penalty area on the 28th minute.

As soon as the referee drew the whistle to his mouth Danns grabbed the ball and dispatched the penalty expertly into the bottom corner.

The midfielder came close to his second in as many minutes when Danny Mayor cut the ball back to him on the edge of the box, but Darius Charles got his body in the way to block.

Five minutes before the break Wimbledon got the equaliser as Andy Barcham got down the left flank and stood up a cross for the unmarked Taylor to head in from close range.

The Dons carried the momentum into half time and came close to taking a lead into the break but Barcham’s shot took a deflection and fizzed narrowly past the post.

Dean Parrett tried his luck from distance after the restart but Ben Williams was focused and collected his effort at the second attempt.

Straight down the other end Mayor tried his luck from 20 yards out but his shot curled agonisingly into the side netting.

Flitcroft made all his changes inside five minutes, Ismael Miller coming on for his home debut in place of Hope, and Andrew Tutte and Tom Walker replacing Zeli Ismail and Danns.

Walker was bright and Mayor almost struck a winner with a fierce 20-yard drive which James Shea palmed clear before Bury were agonisingly hit with a sucker-punch a minute into added time when Meades headed in the winner from a corner.
