IN another relatively quiet week for competition Bury athletes looked towards the South East Lancs Cross Country League at Chorley and the parkrun at Heaton Park for opportunities to test themselves.

Two Bury athletes made the journey to a very muddy Astley Park in Chorley for the cross country races.

Charlie Obank, making his cross country debut for Bury, ran strongly to take fourth place in the under-15 boys’ race.

In the senior men’s race, Giles Bennett produced another good run to finish 45th in a creditable 43mins 18secs for the challenging course.

At Heaton Park, Brandon Quinton made it one place better than his previous week’s performance by finishing a convincing winner in a new personal best of 17:08.

Stefan Kalambouka, another member of Geoff Little’s talented junior squad, took fourth in a new best of 17.34.

The other top 25 finishers were Paul Johnson, recording 18.58 for 18th place, and Sophie Whittaker in 23rd and second female in 19.30.

This weekend sees the English National Cross Country Championships in London’s Parliament Hill Fields and the National Indoor Championships for junior athletes in Sheffield.
