A YOUNG freestyle wrestler from Bury will represent Team GB in competition in Estonia this month.

Sixteen-year-old Ellis Crossley, of Brandlesholme, was picked for his country after attending a week-long training camp at the national wrestling academy in Broughton last month.

The Tottington High School teenager, who also does gymnastics and plays for Bury RUFC Under-16s, will be one of six competitors in the GB squad heading to the Baltic state and dad Steve hopes to get sponsorship to help fund the trip.

He told the Bury Times: "We are looking for local businesses to sponsor Ellis on his journey as it will cost more than £500 to send him to Estonia and he is self-funded.

"He will also be selected for competitions in the future so it would be great to have backing for him."

The Year 11 pupil is currently preparing for his exams but fits in his training around that.

He started freestyle wrestling four years ago at Sharples Wrestling Club in Bolton, initially to help improve his rugby tackling.

He has since gone on to win his third British title – in the 65kg category – before Christmas and the Welsh Open Championship last month.
