BURY Comets' Cycle Speedway star Kaysar Mohammadi was on top form in the Manchester League U19s Individual Final at Astley and Tyldesley.

Despite being still eligible for the younger u16s' category, Mohammadi raced to an impressive total, second only to former British U13s champion, Stockport’s Michael Preston and level with Louis Wright, also from the Stockport club.

In the race-off, Mohammadi called correctly, selecting the favourable grid two.

As the tapes rose, he was away and made no mistake to secure an excellent runners-up spot.

On the team front, Bury narrowly lost out at Stockport in their most recent fixture, with a third place in the Northern League Division One championship now looking most likely, when at one point second was a realistic proposition.

In Divisions Two and Three results have been similar in what has been a rebuilding season at this level.

Highlight of the year to date has been the recruitment of the Dunphy family, adding three riders to younger league squads.

Bury's final fixtures take place during September, when all outstanding issues will be resolved ahead of the season-ending play-offs.

Ahead of those, this Bank Holiday weekend sees the annual British Individual Championships take place – an event with a history going back to 1951.

This year the Championships return to the north for the first time since 2014 when the Open final was staged at Goshen.

This time around that honour goes to Hull’s Hessle Raceway on Monday.

Before that there is action at Astley and Tyldesley on Saturday with Sheffield and Bury on Sunday. Goshen will host the British Veterans’ Championships for over-40s, 50s and 60s, previously staged at the circuit in both 1999 and 2009, alongside two of the semi-finals for the Open competition.

The action starts at 11am with some of Britain’s best riders fighting for a place in that final at Hull. Entry is free, with refreshments and match day programmes available from the trackside cabin and all are welcome to attend.
