RADCLIFFE AC’s Neal Emmerson finished in a fine ninth place when he ran the Yorkshire Marathon in 2hrs 38mins 28secs, giving him a personal-best marathon time by nearly a minute.

There was also a PB by six minutes for club coach Ian Warrington, who clocked 2:53:25.

On Sunday the two battled wet and windy conditions in what is one of the most popular marathons in the UK  and were well pleased with their times with Warrington coming in 61st.

There was a good turnout of 20 runners in the Gin Pit 5-Mile Trail Race on Sunday with Dave McGrath taking third place in 30:57 and Chris Paxton 12th in 32:45.

Chris Whittaker was third home for the club, close behind in 13th place in 32:53 and the three won second place among the men’s teams.

Jenny Yates, Kate Holden and Amanda Callan made up the women’s team which also took second place.

The event was the last in the Central Lancs Grand Prix in which Radcliffe have been battling with several other clubs for race points throughout the season.

The club looks likely to be well up in the prizes.

Fourteen joined the thousands pounding the streets of the city when they took on the Manchester Half Marathon on Sunday, starting and finishing at Old Trafford.

On a flat route billed to be one for good times with a great atmosphere John Gibbs ran a fine 1:29:05, Paula Abernethy came second vet-50 in 1:39:20 and Sheila Jones was first vet-60 in 1:50:21.

There was success the day before in the first Saturday race in the Red Rose Cross Country League at Leigh Sports Village with Donna Cartwright finishing 23rd out of 153 women and Dave McGrath 35th out of 197 men.

Nine juniors took part with Sam Howard finishing well up in the under-11 boys' event in 22nd place and the girls having a team of three runners – Fleur Carter, Niamh Warr and Megan Peterkin – for the first time.

The women were eighth team out of 17 with Jenny Yates home second for the club in 46th position and Kate Holden 64th.

Also running were Victoria Glossop, Caroline Malone, Karen Doherty, Amanda Darbyshire and Sharon Peterkin.

Among the men, John Wrigley was 71st and Chris Whittaker 76th. Also running were Paul Swyers, John McNicholl, Steve Hamer, Paul Barrington and Ken Smith.

Eight battled against grim conditions when they travelled to the Lake District to run the 13-mile Langdale Horseshoe Fell Race on Saturday.

Only three managed to finish with Andy Haines clocking 4:05:57, Fiona Lynch (V40) 4:06:09 and James Hall 4:07:37.

In torrential rain and strong winds on a challenging, rocky course, climbing 4,750 feet, Kris Lee, Peter McNulty, Chris Paxton, Scott Baxter and Lisa Carter, along with a large part of the field, fell victim to the revised cut-off times imposed by the organisers for safety reasons.

The race was the last in the Run The Moors Grand Prix which several clubs have taken part in throughout the season.

Radcliffe, who will be among the top prizes, are to host the annual presentation night next month.

In the popular parkruns, Kath Davies, on holiday in the Big Apple, joined New York Road Runners for a 5k run in Astoria Park . Locally, Vince Ashton was back in action running the Sunday 5k at Burrs Country Park in 36:35 and at Bolton Steve Lomax ran 23:47.

At Heaton Park, Peter Hunter clocked 22:40, Sheila Jones 23:27 and Sarah Oxley and Lucy Dewhurst ran 38:12, while junior Olivia Whittaker had a PB and was first JW10 in 30:11.
