IN a weekend light of club competition, several Bury AC athletes tested themselves at the popular 5k parkrun event at Heaton Park.

And it proved to be Bury domination at the sharp end of the field.

Oliver Makinson ran out as winner in a nippy 16mins 35secs, nine seconds ahead of second-placed Luke Harreld, who is clearly regaining excellent form again as he fully recovers from injury.

Stefan Kalambouka took fifth place in a new personal-best time of 17:29.

In sixth was Byron Edwards (17:42) with Paul Johnston in seventh in a new PB of 18:18.

Sophie Whittaker, home from the Royal Navy to celebrate her birthday, was second female finisher in 19:56.

Other Bury finishers included Edward Hitchin (23:43), Alison Dale (24:12), Pamela Hitchin (24:36), Peter Henderson (27:12), Nicola Brown (28:11) and Brianne Turner (28:15).

A massive number of 687 runners participated in the event.

On Sunday, Edwards, competing in the Green Drive 5-mile road race in Lytham St Annes, took advantage of the flat course and set a new lifetime best of 28:46.

He finished eighth overall, but was the first V40 finisher in what is proving to be an excellent  year for him.
