STEVEN Defour admits he could end his career at Turf Moor.

The Burnley midfielder has returned to fitness following a long-term injury and has featured in the last four games for Sean Dyche’s side.

The 30-year-old is likely to be in the starting XI when the Clarets return to action following the international break with a home game against Newcastle United on Monday night.

And the Belgian, who was hugely impressive for Burnley last season before injury struck, says he is happy in East Lancashire.

Asked if he envisaged finishing his career at Turf Moor, having extended his stay at the club until 2020 earlier in the season, he said: “It is one of the possibilities.

“I am not taking anything for granted. I want to work every week and show what I am capable of and show that good level that I was on last year.

“I want to be at that level really soon and we will see what happens.

“I am not asking for anything, I am not shouting anything off the roof, I just want to play football at the moment.”

Defour missed the second half of last season with a knee injury before picking up a groin problem in pre-season which delayed his comeback.

He added: “It has been a tough last couple of weeks and months, injury wise, my dad passed away so I am trying to enjoy every moment now.

“When you are coming back from a nine month injury, coming back out onto the pitch it almost doesn’t matter what the result is you just want to be out there on the pitch and start playing and enjoy every moment.”

The Clarets return to Premier League action just a point clear of the bottom three having won just two of their opening 12 games.

But they halted a run of defeats with a battling 0-0 draw at Leicester City before the international break and Defour hopes to build on that ahead of Monday’s visit of Newcastle United and next weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace.

And former Porto man Defour believes Dyche’s men can still aim for a top half finish having ended seventh last term and securing a Europa League place.

“We could (finish in the top half),” he added.

“There are signs of it.

“We will get to that point where we will play some good games and start picking up points.

“Every year we have tough moments and now we have a tough moment at the beginning of the season and it will go away at some point and then we will pick up points really fast.”
