TWO young Bury ABC boxers were pipped to national titles at the Girls and Boys Championships finals in Bridlington on Saturday.

Kian Winstanley, aged 15, lost in the Class A 63kg final against Jimmy Lee, of Guildford City, by a unanimous points decision, while 16-year-old Abdul Khan was on the wrong end of a split decision in the 52-54kg Class B bout against Kieran Oakley from Waterside ABC.

Despite their defeats, coach Mick Jelley was proud of their efforts.

He said: “Both fought brilliantly and I was pleased with their displays.

“We had four boxers in the competition and two in the finals and all four went out to the boxers who went on to win the national titles, so it shows how well they all did.”

There was better news on Sunday at the Polish club in Bury where another of the club’s youngsters, 18-year-old Lewis Spanner, won unanimously on points against Conrad Molloy (People’s Gym) at 70kg.
