BURY’S Sandy Choong is a national schools champion for the second year running.
The 14-year-old, who won the Under-13 Girls' title last year, stepped up to win the u16 category at the Butterfly National School Individual finals in Wolverhampton.
Despite not being among the top 10 seeds, Choong progressed through the group and knockout stages to reach the final, where she faced top seed Anaya Patel.
And Choong won a pulsating final tie, missing a match point in the fourth set and finally taking her fourth match point in the deciding fifth set.
The final scoreline was 3-2 (11-3, 3-11, 11-8, 11-13, 12-10).
Choong, a pupil at Woodhey High School in Ramsbottom, said: “It was hard because I’m 14 and playing in the u16s, so I’m really happy to win.”
