BURY Golf Club member Mike Bennett spent a day on the greens completing an eight-course fundraising challenge.

Bennett, a one handicap player, decided at the end of 2018 he would set himself a challenge for the coming year and raise as much money as he could for the Bury Cancer Support Centre.

As a keen golfer he decided his challenge would be to play the eight golf courses of the Bury District Golf Association (BDGA) in one day.

Bennett knew he would be reliant on daylight and so decided the day would be in June and last week he completed the feat.

He started his quest at Breightmet Golf Club at 4am in the pouring rain, he then played Harwood, Greenmount, Rossendale, Walmersley, Lowes Park, Pike Fold and finally his home course of Bury finishing at around 10pm.

He played 144 holes of golf, walking approximately 40 miles and each course took him around two hours to play which is an achievement in itself.

Understandably, Bennett was physically and mentally shattered at the end but he still had a big smile on his face knowing that due to his herculean effort and with sponsorship money still coming in, he is expecting to raise in excess of £1,500 for his cause.
