One of the most memorable comebacks Gigg Lane ever witnessed wasn’t actually achieved by Bury – rather Eoin Hand’s Huddersfield Town.

The Shakers roared into a 4-0 lead at half time thanks to goals from Liam Robinson, Colin Greenall, Ian Stevens and Nigel Smith and must have thought they had the game won when they went in at the interval.

Alas, the Yorkshiremen had other plans and with a formidable strike force in Iwan Roberts and Phil Starbuck scoring two apiece, they bombarded the Shakers’ back line to drag themselves level.

The 1991/92 season had been a fairly positive one to that point and the result left Bury ninth in the table. A week later they beat Fulham 3-1 with Robinson and Greenall again on the scoresheet alongside Peter Valentine.

The club got as high as seventh place with a 2-0 win at Darlington in which the home side had two players sent off but the downturn in form was echoed by financial problems off the pitch which eventually led to the forced sale of Greenall to Preston North End for just £50,000 at the bank’s behest.

Ironically, Preston condemned the Shakers to relegation just a few months later, on the final day of the season.

Flashback photo

Bury Times:

We dug this team photo out of our archives – but with no caption attached, we’re in the dark over some of the faces lining up on the Gigg Lane pitch.

Judging by the shirt, the snap was taken in 1993/94, and going off the fresh faces, we can only assume it is the Bury youth team of the day. But can you pick out some of the people involved? Email us on burysport@nqnw.co.uk if you can help us put some names to the players involved.

This week in Shakers history

1963: The Shakers finally made their way past Birmingham City in the FA Cup at the third attempt. Icy weather forced the first game to be abandoned at St Andrew’s, after which the two sides fought out a 3-3 draw.

Just a few days later they met again at Gigg Lane and on this occasion Bill Calder and Bill Griffin were on target to book a fourth-round date with Manchester City.

1993: David Adekola scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory at Scarborough – making it six goals in just three starts.

1995: David Pugh scored a hat-trick for the Shakers as they put a marker down for a memorable double over Northampton Town with a 5-0 victory at their new Sixfields Stadium. Just a month later they would repeat the scoreline at Gigg Lane with Pugh on target twice more.

2018: Nicky Maynard struck his 19th goal of the season five minutes into injury time at Stevenage to secure a priceless win for Ryan Lowe’s Shakers.

Guess the player

Bury Times:

This week’s mystery man is a tough one, as he never actually played a first-team game for the Shakers. Local football fans should certainly recognise his keeper, though, as he played more than 500 times over his career.

Last week’s answer

Bury Times:

Last week’s mystery Shakers man, was midfielder Tony Rigby – who played 166 league games for the club between 1992 and 1997 and scored 19 goals.
