THREE of Bury’s talented multi-event athletes travelled to Telford to represent Greater Manchester in the English Schools Athletics Association North West Combined Events Championships.

In the intermediate boys octathlon competition, there was a one-two for Bury as Natan Witowski took the gold medal with Jay Cook taking silver. Natan secured a total of 4,473 points with individual wins in the 400m (53.5) and 110m hurdles (14.8). Jay’s tally was 4,385 points with wins in the javelin (39.11) and shot (12.98). Rosella Togo, competing in the intermediate girls heptathlon, kept Bury in the medals by taking an excellent bronze with a points total of 4,093.

All three now progress to the national finals that will be held in Bedford in September.

Andy Mellor competed in the Trawden seven mile trail race, taking an excellent third place in 42.44.4.

Callum Gaunt was Bury’s sole competitor in the Run Media City 5k. where he was fourth place in 18.03. Jenny Pilling ran in the Andy O’Sullivan Tribute 5k in Littleborough where she was second women finisher in 19.26.

At the Trafford Sprints Grand Prix meeting, Natan, Jay and Rosella fine-tuned for the weekend’s schools event. Natan set a new lifetime best of 53.38 to win the under-17 400m. Rosella took third in the 80m hurdles in a nippy 12.45 and third again in the long jump with a best leap of 4.83. Jay took third in the 100m hurdles (15.51) and fourth in the long jump (5.60).
