BURY AC’s Jay Cook competed in the Northern Athletics Under 17/Under 15 Championships last weekend.

Cook made the journey over to Hull and competed in the Under 17 100m hurdles and shot events where he just missed out on a medal.

In the hurdles he took fifth place in a time of 15.75 and in the discus he took fourth with a best throw of 34.50. The previous weekend the talented multi-eventer competed in the England Athletics Junior Championships at Sportcity where he took seventh place in the shot competition with a best putt of 13.11.

In an otherwise quiet weekend of sport, several Bury runners tested themselves over the local Parkrun courses.

Young Sam Smyth was fastest finisher at Leverhulme Park in Bolton, setting a new personal best of 17.54.

At Heaton Park, Paul Johnson (19.21) was the fastest Bury runner followed by Rachel Marshall (19.49 and fastest lady); Sarah Thomas (19.53 and second fastest lady); Giles Bennett (20.27); Matt Garside (volunteer pacemaker 21.47) and 10-year-old Lucy Dent (22.56).

Six Bury athletes competed the previous Tuesday evening at the Trafford Grand Prix meeting at Stretford. Jack Griffiths and Matt Garside ran in the B 3,000m race and were both rewarded with new personal bests.

Griffiths took third place in 9.31.13 with Garside seventh in 9.58.63. Multi-eventer Natan Witkowski competed in two of the under 17s field events, taking third in the shot (10.77) and fourth in the discus (26.61).

In the Rochdale 10k, Nicola Ryan set a new personal best of 41.27 to finish second woman. Not far behind and making a good return from injury was Katie Geelan who took third place in 41.54. Coach Irfan Qureshi finished eighth V50 in 47.27.

Next weekend Bury athletes compete in the Greater Manchester County Championships.
