ANDY Welsh praised Bury AFC’s winning mentality which was underlined with Saturday’s ‘dead rubber’ victory at Golcar and Tuesday’s Macron Cup success against Prestwich Heys.

AFC went in to Saturday’s clash already crowned NWCL First Division North champions but they made sure they finished a memorable campaign on a winning note as goals from Ben Wharton, Tom Greaves and Jimmy Moore sealed a 3-0 victory.

On Tuesday, they returned to action for their first round clash against derby rivals Heys and proved to be just too good as Greaves grabbed a hat-trick while Wharton was on target once again in an impressive 4-1 win.

“Every game we go in to we go in to win and that is the mentality,” Welsh told the club’s Youtube channel following the weekend win.

“We could have easily come in to this game (against Golcar) with the wrong mentality but that is one thing we said in the dressing room that wasn’t going to happen.

“You saw a full blooded performance out there, full of running after the 90th minute so whatever team that goes out there, I am sure they will put their heart and soul in to it.”

Welsh hailed an ‘outstanding’ season that saw AFC lose just once throughout the campaign

“So proud of the players and when you get to the end of the season, you look where you are in the league and it doesn’t lie,” he said. “It’s 27 wins and only one loss and eight draws is absolutely outstanding.”

Reflecting on Saturday’s win, Welsh added: “I just thought it was another dominate performance and we got our just rewards in the end. Bit fortuitous potentially with the first goal, other than that I thought first half we were always creating chances arguably could have been ahead first half but again I am so proud of the lads.”
