There was a fantastic age-group win for Sheila McNulty when two veteran Radcliffe Athletic Club runners completed the challenging Lakeland 50 ultra race.

McNulty was first W70 in 17hrs 45mins 29secs in the popular Lake District event which is billed as one of the greatest ultra trail challenges in Europe.

Meanwhile, Kath Davies finished the tough 50-mile route, which has 10,000 feet of climbing, in a great 15:29:55.

The route took competitors from the northern end of Ullswater within the Dalemain Estate to Kentmere, Ambleside and Langdales, among other places, before a climb and descent to the finish at Coniston.

There were six manned checkpoints along the way and a medal and a T-shirt at the finish for those who managed to battle their way through the testing conditions.

McNulty said: “It was a real adventure, especially running through the night because we didn’t start until 12pm on Saturday.

“It rained from start to finish and there was plenty of water and mud on the ground; but it wasn’t cold, more muggy, so it was okay.

Davies warmed up for the Lakeland 50 by winning her age group at the midweek Lee Mill Fell Race. She was joined by clubmate Karen Doherty at the 6.6-mile race which has 1,089 feet of climbing on the hills above Rossendale.

It was a good battle between the pair, who swapped positions several times, but Davies’ strength, speed and technical ability showed on the final, stony descent.

Davies was first WV55 in 1:21:29, despite recovering from Covid, while Doherty ran 1:22:01.

Radcliffe runners travelled the length of the country to take part in the popular Saturday morning 5k parkruns.

Peter Hunter was 22nd in 22:46 at Land’s End.
