RAMSBOTTOM United won a penalty shootout to progress to the third round of the Integro League Trophy on Tuesday night after a hard-fought contest at home to Hyde United ended 0-0 after normal time.
Ben Richardson stroked home the decisive spot kick as the Rams won the shootout 4-3, showing great spirit to bounce back from Saturday’s league defeat at bottom club Goole.
Luke Thompson headed over an early chance for the Rams, while towering defender Tyrone Gay skied an effort for the hosts.
Rammy stopper Danny Taberner was forced into a couple of neat saves before Grant Spencer, Jamie Rother and Richardson spurned opportunities at the other end before the break.
Second-half substitute Sam Heathcote scuffed a weak shot 20 minutes from time after an attempted clearance fell at his feet.
The Rams were forced to play the final 10 minutes with 10 men after Adam Kay limped off with all three substitutes already made. But Hyde were unable to make their numerical advantage count as the game went to penalties.
The visitors got the shootout underway, and missed two of their opening five penalties, while the Rams converted three from four to give final penalty taker Richardson the chance to be the hero, and he made no mistake.
