FOOTBALL returned to Gigg Lane for the first time in three years on Sunday.

Home side Bury FC Women won 3-0 against their opponents Fleetwood Town Wren Ladies in front of almost 500 fans, many of them families with children.

On a hot afternoon, the first goal came just before half time from Lucy Golding followed by goals in second half from Kimberley Tyson and Sophie Coates.

The game was mainly dominated by Bury, who had a goal disallowed due to offside but there could have been more goals for the home side.

It was a highly contested match which included goalkeeper Abbey Hamer suffering a knee injury.

But home fans went home delighted following the convincing victory.

The match was the first at Gigg Lane since Bury FC played out a 1-1 draw with Port Vale there in May 2019 before they were expelled from the Football League.

On Monday morning, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was at the stadium to see the work being done to clean up the ground and as part of the government's football reform plans.
