MEMBERS of Bury’s Jewish community with diabetes are being encouraged to talk to their rabbi about healthy eating during September, which is Diabetes Awareness Month.

Three major Jewish festivals in September focus on fasting or feasting — Rosh Hashanah, Simchat Torah and Yom Kippur.

They can be difficult for people with diabetes, who experts say need to be careful about what they eat.

Jenne Patel, Diabetes UK equality and diversity manager, said: “It’s important to consider your own personal situation before deciding whether to fast during Yom Kippur. If you do decide to fast and you treat your diabetes with insulin or other medication, you may need to adjust the dose. This should be done in conjunction with your healthcare professional.

“Making, sharing and eating food is integral to celebrating Rosh Hashanah and Simchat Torah and if you have diabetes then you don’t have to miss out. The occasional sweet treat can be incorporated into a healthy balanced diet.”
