A FRAUDSTER who netted more than £35,000 in benefits over an eight-year period has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Bolton Crown Court heard that Tanweer Rashid claimed his mother lived alone at a property he co-owned in Albert Avenue, Prestwich, in order to claim, in her name, housing and council tax benefits. But the fraud came to light in 2011.
Tina Landale, prosecuting, said Rashid, aged 44, said he lived elsewhere, but documents, including credit card statements and wage slips, proved otherwise and Rashid then pleaded guilty to fraudulently claiming the benefits..
Damian Zelazowski, defending, said Rashid had used the money to fund the mortgage and other bills, but was now paying it back and regrets the crime.
“He is remorseful. It has put a significant blot on his character,” said Mr Zelazowski.
Recorder Roger Farley QC sentenced Rashid to nine months in prison, suspended for two years and ordered him to do 180 hours unpaid work.
