A new group in Prestwich is making a bid to create an ethical wholefood experience to showcase local produce and reduce food wasteage.

A community share offer, launched with support from The Co-operative Enter-prise Hub, is aimed at raising £120,000 required to establish a wholefood enterprise committed to offering organic, sus-tainable and affordable produce.

The newly-formed society, known as the Village Greens, aims to create local jobs and volunteer opportunities. It also wants to build community links and provide awareness sessions that tackle sustainable food issues, health and wellbeing, and tips on sustainable shopping on a budget.

Rachel Getliffe, secretary and founder member of the Village Greens, said: “We have been delighted by the enthusiasm and interest shown so far.

“A community meeting in July saw over 80 people attend, mostly through word of mouth. These are people with a shared passion for local healthy produce free from additives, preservatives and colour-ings.

“We will work with suppliers to ensure fresh, seasonal supplies while minimising food waste and packaging.

“We will create an ethical shopping experience where consumers can enjoy high quality food at affordable prices and be confident about the provenance of the produce they are buying for themselves, their friends and families.”

The society, which has identified the Longfield Centre in Prestwich as a location, will also stock dairy products, vegan and vegetarian options, sustainably sourced fish and organic wines and beers, as well as environment-friendly toiletries and household products.

The community share offer remains open until December 2, with the cost of membership starting at £100.
