YOUNGSTERS were in for a marvel-lous time when they got the chance to create their own comic book superheroes.

The event attracted young people aged 10 to 16 to Prestwich Library for the visit of renowned cartoonist Tim Quinn, who has drawn some of the world’s most famous cartoon heroes, for publishers Marvel and DC Thomson.

Assistant librarian Jean Swanson said: “The event was incredible because it was more like a learning project.

“Mr Quinn told them about how he had worked on comics like Bunty, The Beezer and The Dandy. He then moved to New York to work for the famous comic book creator Stan Lee and has helped create comic book stories which include Spiderman, The Incredible Hulk and Wonder Woman.”

Ms Swanson said that Mr Quinn took the children through the history of the comic book from the 1930s and showed them how to create their own superhero stage by stage and to make up a story surrounding their individual characters.

She said: “What was really amazing for the children was the fact they were able to create their own heroes and make up their own stories.”

Mr Quinn looked at all of their creations and was extremely complimentary of each one of them.”

The event was held as part of the Try Reading Project which is funded by the National Lottery and the Arts Council England.
