OWNERS of a petrol station have been given the green light to sell alcohol at any time of the day or night.

Longsight Service Station in Greenmount is open 24 hours a day, but had a restriction on the times it could sell alcohol.

Jersey-based Rontect Watford Ltd asked Bury Council for permission to extend the alcohol sales hours, and, at a licensing panel hearing at the town hall the application was accepted.

Two North Manor councillors, Cllr Dorothy Gunther and Cllr James Daly, formally opposed the application for the garage on Longsight Road, and spoke at the meeting.

They argued that it would be inappropriate for a residential area and were worried that groups of youths would gather outside.

After the meeting, panel member Cllr Dot Cassidy explained why permission had been granted.

“When objectors come to the panel attempting to prevent an application going through, they have to give evidence of things that have already happened — not fears about what might happen — and they did not present any evidence,” she said.
