HUNDREDS of pupils paraded through the town centre to mark Bury Grammar Schools’ Founders Day.

The procession was led by the school’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and pupils from the boys and girls schools walked to the war memorial at Bury Parish Church to lay wreaths and remember former pupils who died in both World Wars.

The Corp of Drums led this year’s parade which was held on May 2, and wore ‘Blues’ which were provided by Major Tex Calton, and organised by Harry Bearn, drum sergeant major of the CCF.

Reverend John Findon, who is a governor at the school, held a service for senior pupils at the parish church, and the address was given by the Rt Rev Geoff Pearson, Bishop of Lancaster.

Younger boys and girls attended a service in the Roger Kay Hall of the Girls’ School, which was led by Reverend Simon Cook.

There was also a Founders’ Day observance held at school for pupils of other faiths, so they could participate in the celebration. Richard Marshall, headmaster of Bury Grammar School Boys, said: “We received a warm welcome from the town of Bury, as ever. With the CCF leading the parade, it was a very proud day for the Bury Grammar Schools.

“I feel very privileged to be headmaster, but on Founder’s Day it certainly feels extra special.

“As we turn the corner from Tenterden Street out onto the dual carriageway, there is an amazing view of the school as you look back along the procession.”

The Founder’s Day dates back to the 18th century: Roger Kay founded the school on May 6, 1726.
