A TEACHER has resigned after an investigation was started into an allegation of “inappropriate behaviour” with a pupil.

It is understood that the teacher at Tottington High School had been told he would be suspended from his role at the school in Laurel Street during the investigation, but then announced his resignation.

Police say no allegations or evidence have been presented to them, and that no criminal investigation is currently taking place.

A Bury Council spokesman said: “A teacher at Tottington High School was suspended in relation to a safeguarding allegation which is being investigated.

“The teacher has subsequently resigned from his post.

“Safeguarding of pupils in all schools remains paramount and the school has robust safeguarding procedures.

“The authority is assisting the school in the investigation of this matter.”

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of the matter, but there has been nothing disclosed to us and we have not been presented with any evidence of criminal behaviour.

“There has been some inappropriate behaviour on his part, but the matter is resting with the school.”

The school refused to comment.
