FIREFIGHTERS pulled an ice-cream van out of a flooded road this evening.

Crews from Bury were called the top of Ferngrove, Bury, under the M66 bridge.

Watch Manager at Bury Fire Station Steve Wilcock said: "The ice-cream man ended up trapped in water that was almost a metre deep in parts.

"We used a special winch to drag the van out of the water."

Firefighters from Bury, Heywood and Whitefield attended because initial reports suggested the driver could be in danger from rising water levels.

They were alerted at 6.20pm.

Mr Wilcock warned motorists to take extra care in this weather, which is causing localised flooding on the roads.

He said: "I would be very careful about driving into any flood, it's hard to know how deep it is and your car can quickly become abandoned in this weather that we're experiencing at the moment."

It is the second flood related incident crews from Bury have been called out on today.

Crews were at the scene for 40 minutes.
