Serial thief sent straight to jail

A SERIAL shoplifter has been jailed for 20 weeks after he committed yet another offence.

Wayne Englebert, aged 37, of Thompson Drive, Topping Fold, admitted to Bury magistrates on December 21 that he stole meat from Marks and Spencer in Bury on December 15 and watches from TK Maxx in Bury on December 20.

He had been given a suspended sentence for similar offences by the same court on December 7.

At the latest hearing, magistrates said a custodial sentence was inevitable because of Englebert's record.

Drink driver banned

A DRINK driver has been banned from getting behind the wheel for a year.
Matthew Ogden, aged 36, of Beech Grove Close, Bury, drove a Volkswagen Amarok in Rochdale Road, Bury, on November 11, while over the legal alcohol limit.

He admitted the offence to Bury magistrates on December 29 and was also ordered to pay fines and court costs totalling £635.

Man cleared of assaulting woman 

A MAN has been cleared of attacking a woman.

Kyle Byrne, aged 20, of Massey Street, Bury, was accused of assaulting the woman in Bury on July 27.

He denied the offence to Bury magistrates on August 24 and was found not guilty on December 16 after the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence.

Car vandal given warning by court

A MAN who damaged three cars has been warned to stay out of trouble for a year.

Dafydd Billington, aged 20, of Buller Street, Bury, damaged a Toyota Corolla belonging to a woman and a Honda Civic belonging to Stephen Hadley and a white Ford Escort Van.

All three offences took place on October 18 and the damage cost £810 in total.

Billington admitted three counts of criminal damage to Bury magistrates on December 21 and was given a 12-month conditional discharge.

He must also pay £115 court costs and each vehicle owner compensation to fund the repairs.

Drink-driver jailed for 18 weeks

A DRINK driver has been jailed for 18 weeks after being branded "a danger to the public".

Roman Pietruszka, aged 33, of Alfred Street, Fishpool, drove a Renault Megane in Bury New Road, Heywood, on December 20 while over the legal alcohol limit.

At the time of the offence, he was subject to a driving ban.

Pietruszka admitted drink driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance to Bury magistrates on December 21 and was also ordered to pay £230 court costs and was banned from driving for three years.

According to court documents, magistrates told Pietruszka the offences were so serious "because of your record of drink driving and of driving while disqualified. You are a danger to the public."

Jail sentence for iPhone thief

A THIEF who stole mobile phones worth more than £2,500 has been jailed for 24 weeks.

Anthony Woods, aged 29, of Salcombe Road, Openshaw, stole two iPhones worth a total of £1,158 from Carphone Warehouse in Peel Way, Bury, on November 3 and then stole two iPhones worth a total of £1,488 from the Stretford branch of O2 on November 25.

He admitted two counts of theft to Bury magistrates on December 21 and was also ordered to pay a £180 criminal courts charge.

According to court documents, magistrates said the offences were serious because of the high value of property taken and because Woods had gone to one of the shops equipped with pliers to cut security cables and failed to desist when approached by staff.

Driver banned and fined £160

AN UNINSURED driver crashed into two vehicle — then refused to have a breath test.

James Andrew Hazell, aged 49, of Saxon Street, Radcliffe, drove an Audio in Saxon Street, Radcliffe, on December 29 when it hit a Land Rover Freelander and a Mazda MX5.

He appeared before Bury magistrates on December 30 and admitted driving without insurance, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and refusing to give a breath test.

Hazell was given an eight-week prison sentence suspended for a year, banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £160 court costs.

According to court documents, magistrates said the offences were serious because "there was evidence of impairment and there was a collision with multiple vehicles."

Thief to have alcohol treatment

A SHOPLIFTER from Radcliffe has been ordered to get alcohol dependency treatment.

John Webster, aged 44, of Hampson Street, admitted to Bury magistrates on December 30 that he stole a Firetrap jumper worth £25 from T J Hughes in the Mill Gate Shopping Centre in Bury on November 10.

At the time of the offence, he was subject to a community order after committing similar offences.

Magistrates have ordered Webster to undergo treatment for 12 months and he must also pay fines and court costs totalling £109.

Drink-driver spared prison

A DRINK driver who got into a row with a police officer has been spared jail.

Paul Fryer, aged 51, of Sandy Lane, Prestwich, drove a Mercedes Sprinter Van in Sandy Lane, Prestwich, while over the legal alcohol limit on November 9.

He appeared before Bury magistrates on December 29 and admitted drink driving and resisting a police officer in the execution of his duty.

Fryer was given an eight-week prison sentence suspended for a year and banned from driving for 40 months.

According to court documents, magistrates said the offences were serious because Fryer had a record relating to a similar matter in 2014.

He must do 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £165 court costs.

Man, 41, admits damage charge

A MAN went to the house of a Whitefield woman and damaged her cupboard door.

Richard Ellams, aged 41, of Walker Street, Rochdale, admitted to Bury magistrates on December 29 that he damaged the door, belonging to Becky Hall, on December 4.

He was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay Ms Hall for repairs to the cupboard and £100 court costs.

Man fined for destroying mobile

A MAN has been left £705 out of pocket after destroying a mobile phone.

Maeus Polak, aged 22, of Thatch Leach Lane, Whitefield, admitted to Bury magistrates on December 21 that he destroyed Arias Tamari's phone in Bury on December 6.

He was fined £250 and ordered to pay Mr Tamari £200 compensation.

Polak also had to pay a £150 criminal court charge and a £20 victim surcharge.
