BURY was under a blanket of snow over the weekend — making way for a stunning sight as the Flying Scotsman soared through the town.

Twitter user Ben Hall captured the impressive engine from Market Street looking west on Sunday.

The computer teacher also recorded a video of the locomotive before posting it onto the social media site, along with a still photograph.

He tweeted: "Fantastic to see the #FlyingScotsman passing through Bury in the snow this morning."

Sir Nigel Gresley's iconic A3 Pacific has been seen on the East Lancashire Railway over two weekends this year, attracting thousands of train enthusiasts from far and wide to witness the event.

Engineers from Riley & Son, based in Baron Street, Bury, painstakingly restored the locomotive in a £4.2 million restoration project with help from the National Railway Museum in York.

Elsewhere in Bury, Harley Watson, aged nine, played in the snow at his grandmother's in Central Drive, Walmersley, with his beloved Shih Tzu Mickey.

His father Andrew Watson said: "Harley had been stopping at his grandmother's, so I went to pick him up and took Mickey. They're best of friends and can't bear to be apart for too long. As soon as I arrived the pair were out playing and jumping in the snow.

"Normally in Bury we only have one day of snow a year, so we like to make the most of it. Last year we were out sledging in Clarence Park. It's always lots of fun."

Bury Athletic Club also joined in with the winter fun by uploading a 'training' photo to Twitter, which suspiciously looked like a snowball fight, with the caption: "Sunday morning training @BuryAC."

Kirsty Troughton uploaded a photo near Walmersley golf course to Twitter, posting: "I love a snow day!!! Perks of living up north #Bury."
