A BRAZIER that was lit at a car garage in Bury caused a car to catch fire.
It's understood fire crews were called to a unit near the Woolfold Trading Estate after the car— a Vauxhall Astra caught fire.
Paper that had been put into the brazier is believed to have been caught by the wind and landed on the car, causing the fire.
The hire car was destroyed.
A crew from Bury and Ramsbottom were called to the scene at around 4pm on Wednesday.
Crew manager Stephen Wilcock said: “We had to secure the garage to make sure it didn’t spread.
“The staff had already tried to use every extinguisher in the place to stop it but it was too big.
“It was a bit of a mad panic for them to move the other cars in close proximity.”
The crews were on the scene for around 40 minutes and there were no injuries.
Mr Wilcock added: “It is a warning to others who are going to light braziers or a log burner, which are very popular these days.
“If you do put paper in it or anything like that it becomes buoyant and this could happen.
“Especially in homes, the paper can float up the chimney and cause a fire.
”Only solid materials should really be put in them.”
