Community order for fraudulent benefit claim

A WOMAN who dishonestly claimed housing benefit has been given a community order.
Carra King, of Milner Street, Radcliffe, pleaded guilty to failing to notify Bury Council and the Department for Work and Pensions of a change in circumstances which would have affected her entitlement to housing benefit.
The change was that she was now living with her partner, Scott Whittle.
A community order was made where the defendant was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.
The 21-year-old was also ordered to pay victim surcharge of £60 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Yob threw heavy torch at pregnant woman 

A YOB who threw a heavy torch at a pregnant woman has been jailed for 12 weeks.
James Andrew Taylor, aged 22, of Ulverston Close, Liverpool, went to a property in Tennyson Avenue, on July 13 and tried to speak to a woman.
The woman was leaning through her upstairs window and Taylor threw the torch at her.
It struck her on the head and left her with a head injury. He then rode off on his bike.
Taylor admitted the assault to Bury magistrates, who said the offence was serious because his victim was pregnant and because it was committed in the presence of two children.
Taylor must pay £115 court costs. The victim told the courts that she did not want any compensation from him.

Community order given for assault

A RADCLIFFE man has been given a community order for assaulting a woman.
Samuel Appleyard, aged 25, pleaded guilty at Bury Magistrates Court to the assault on June 14 in Rochdale.
A community order was made where the defendant was given a rehabilitation requirement where he must attend appointments with a responsible officer for 15 days.
He was also fined £80, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £85 and costs of £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Ban for drink-driver, 27

A WOMAN has been banned from getting behind the wheel for 23 months after drink driving.
Hermione McCann, aged 27, of Crossdale Road, Breightmet, drove a Nissan Micra in Carrwood Hey, Ramsbottom, on July 21 while over the legal alcohol.
McCann also crashed the Micra into a Nissan Qashqai and did not stop at the scene.
She admitted two motoring offences to Bury magistrates and was also ordered to do 60 hours of unpaid work and pay £170 court costs.

Man guilty of phone damage

A MAN has been given a six-month conditional discharge after damaging a woman's mobile phone.
Barry Milburn, aged 62, of Tottington Road, Harwood, admitted to Bury magistrates that he committed the offence in Bury New Road, Ramsbottom, on July 10.
Milburn was also ordered to stay away from the woman for a year and to pay £85 in court costs and compensation.

One-year ban for driver, 39

DECLAN McGuirk, aged 39, of Lea Mount Drive, Fairfield, has been banned from getting behind the wheel for a year for drink driving.
McGuirk drove a Vauxhall Combi Van in Goldfinch Drive, Bury, on July 16 while over the legal alcohol limit.
He admitted the offence to Bury magistrates and was also ordered to pay £415 in fines and costs.

Drink-driver banned

A 28-MONTH road ban was the penalty for an Elton man who admitted drink-driving.
Darren Shaw, aged 51, of Spencer Street, drove a Vauxhall Vivaro in Brandlesholme Road, Bury, on July 15 while over the legal alcohol limit.
Bury magistrates ordered him to do 90 hours of unpaid work and pay £170 court costs.

Man jailed for abusive behaviour

STEPHEN Russell, aged 40, of Parkside Walk, Bury, was jailed for a week after admitting to Bury magistrates that he used abusive behaviour towards a man in Bury on April 20.
He must also pay £115 court costs.

Three-year ban for drink driver 

A DRINK driver has been banned from getting behind the wheel for three years.
Yasamin Amirabadi, aged 28, of Gatehouse Court, Bridgefield Drive, Fairfield, drove a Lexus in Peel Way, Bury, on June 26, while over the legal alcohol limit.
She admitted drink driving to Bury magistrates and was also ordered to pay £225 in fines and court costs.

Man, 33, stole TVs and razors

A THIEF has appeared in court after shoplifting four times in four days.
Anthony Ready, aged 33, of Forth Avenue, Liverpool, went to Bury on April 11 and stole a £200 television from Aldi and a £25 pack of razors from Savers Stores.
The following day, he stole a £200 television from B&M Bargains in Bury and then he stole £50 worth of razors from Tesco in Bury on April 14.
Ready admitted four counts of theft to Bury magistrates and was ordered to do 40 hours of unpaid work and pay a total of £275 compensation to the shops.

Man banned for drink-driving

A RADCLIFFE man has been banned from getting behind the wheel for a year after admitting drink driving.
Stuart Jones, aged 29, of Seddon Avenue, drove a Vauxhall Corsa in Holland Street, Radcliffe, on June 26 while over the legal alcohol limit.
He admitted drink driving and driving without insurance to Bury magistrates and was also ordered to pay £355 court costs.

Conditional discharge for 28-year-old 

CURTIS Carruthers, aged 28, of Milton Road, Radcliffe, admitted drunk and disorderly behaviour in Massey Street, Freetown, to Bury magistrates and was given a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £20 court costs.

Woman admits heroin charge

A RADCLIFFE woman has been given a 12-month condition discharge after being caught with heroin.
Joanne Casey, aged 44, of Crompton Place, admitted to Bury magistrates that she was in possession of diamorphine in Bury on July 5.
She was also ordered to pay £105 court costs.

Man guilty of assault 

ANDREW Leishman, aged 43, of Foxhill Drive, Rawtenstall, has been ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work after assaulting a woman in Bury.
Leishman admitted to Salford magistrates that he committed the offence on May 9.
He must also pay £265 court costs.

Attacker given fine

ADAM Cooper, 28, of Windsor Avenue, Whitefield, was ordered to pay £569 in fines and court costs after admitting to Bury magistrates that he assaulted a woman in Bury on April 2.

Suspended sentence for breaching restraining order

A MAN who breached a restraining order in Whitefield has been given a suspended sentence.

Michael Platt, aged 32, breached a restraining order on June 23 in Whitefield when he contacted Lyndsey Gould after Bolton Crown Court imposed the order on March 15.

The Green, Worsley, resident was committed to prison for 16 weeks suspended for 18 months.

He was also given an 18 month supervision requirement at the hearing at Bury Magistrates Court.

Thief jailed for 12 weeks

A WHITEFIELD man has been jailed for 12 weeks after going on a crime spree.

Keith Harris, aged 41, of Albert Road, committed three offences on July 26 and was jailed because he was on licence at the time.

On July 26, Harris stole a kitchen knife worth £3 from John Hughes.

He then stole cash and an iPhone with a combined value of £103 from Samuel Friday.

Harris admitted two counts of theft and one count of weapons possession to Bury magistrates and was sentenced this week.

Magistrates also ordered him to pay £100 compensation to Mr Hughes.

Man guilty of peace breach

A MAN has appeared in court charged with breach of the peace.
Duncan Spencer Smith, aged 41, of Warwick Street, Prestwich, admitted carrying out the offence in Bury last Thursday to Bury magistrates.
He was bound over in the sum of £100 for 12 months.
