A BURY cancer centre has been badly damaged after it was flooded on New Year’s Eve.

Bury Cancer Support Centre may have suffered thousands of pounds worth of damage from flood water which broke through the ceiling of the centre in Bolton Road.

Fire crews were called to the scene at 10.50pm after managers visited a centre when its alarm was set off by the water damage.

Steve Wilcock, watch manager at Bury Fire Station, said: “The centre has suffered extensive damage inside. It is a charity organisation which is now facing thousands of pounds in costs to make the repairs.

“It was probably caused by a burst pipe in the roof.

“There was one room where the ceiling has come down. We think it’s because of a burst pipe jetting out water.”

Crews isolated the leak and made the electrics safe.

They were on the scene for around an hour and a half.

The centre has been established for 15 years but only moved to the new premises in Bolton Road, formerly known as Abbeyfield House, two years ago.

It was bought by a mystery benefactor business man who rented it to the centre under a 10-year tenancy agreement.

Before the opening it underwent an eight-week refurbishment including interior building work, electrics, new heating system, pipework, new roof in the conservatory and removal of asbestos.
