BURY could get a dusting of snow this week, after the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for the region.

Following earlier advice that the temperature was due to plummet, forecasters have now said that snow is likely across the region, including Greater Manchester.

A Met Office spokesman said Northwesterly winds will bring “occasional snow showers throughout Thursday” with the potential for disruption to transport networks.

The Met Office chief forecaster added: “A cold northwesterly airstream will be in place throughout Thursday, bringing occasional snow showers.

“Around 2cm of snow is possible even to low levels in places. 5-10 cm is possible on high ground above about 200m.”

The weather warning remains in place for Friday, with the Met Office advising that showers of snow, sleet and hail are likely across the North.

Up to four centimetres could fall across affected lowland areas, while higher ground could may see up to ten centimetres.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Disruption to transport networks seems likely either due to snow or ice. Additionally, strong winds and large waves will affect some eastern coastal areas.”

The Met Office chief forecaster added: “A cold northerly airstream will keep the risk of wintry weather going through Friday. Some inland areas, sheltered from the northerly wind, seem likely to escape most of the showers.”
