THOUSANDS of women will descend on Heaton Park to join the fight against cancer in a series of Race For Life events this weekend.

What’s in store for Saturday?

Pretty Muddy 5k will begin on Saturday when women will start to arrive at 9.30am before the fun kicks off at 10am.

When does the Race For Life take place?

Women will start arriving at the Prestwich park at 10am on Sunday, for the Race For Life 5k and 10k event. Dawn Nisbet, who used Race for Life as a springboard to get fit and healthy, will speak about her step-mother’s battle with ovarian cancer and the importance of Race for Life at 10.30am.

A mass warm-up will begin at 10.45am before runners get off to a start at 11am.

How many women have entered?

More than 7,600 women - including cancer survivors and people taking part in memory or celebration or a loved one - are set to come together for the 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy obstacle course events.

What is Pretty Muddy?

Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course - with added mud, thrills and spills. Participants will tackle 10 obstacles including balance beams, climbing nets, tunnels, crawling under cargo nets, bouncing on space hoppers, scrambling through a mud pit and sliding into a mud-chute.

What’s the Race For Life course?

It’s a fairly hilly course featuring a mix of terrain with roads, footpaths and grass, it gives some stunning views of the park, golf course and Heaton Hall.

Where does money raised through the events go?

Money raised through Race for Life helps Cancer Research UK to fund long-term research and pioneering trials, leading to new tests and kinder treatments which could save the lives of men, women and children across the North West and beyond.

Where to park?

There is pay and display parking at the venue. 

What if I'm travelling by tram?

The nearest Metrolink station is Heaton Park. Trams run regularly from the city centre and other destinations. There is a gate into the park directly opposite the station. There are also several bus routes which stop at Heaton Park.

What is the weather going to be like?

Saturday will be largely dry, although the odd shower is possible. It will turn cooler and more unsettled over the weekend, with spells of rain at times. People can expect highs of 18 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 17 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
